The headlines on stories about the Hong Kong film industry in recent years have made for grim reading. "The industry is struggling" was about as positive as it got. To be sure, things are a far cry from Hong Kong cinema's heyday, from the 1970s well into the 1990s. By the late 1990s, the industry had settled into a funk, stung by piracy, reports of links to triads and international competition that increasingly crowded out local fare.
